Obama’s Homebrewing?

From Obamafoodorama, the Obamas recently served a honey ale homebrewed with honey from the White House beehive. It’s apparently the first time in recorded history that homebrewed beer was made and served in the White House. Just like most other homebrewers, the White House chefs brewed a practice run before serving the beer to guests at a superbowl party. The Obamas purchased the homebrewing equipment with their own funds, and there’s even talk of adding hops vines to the White House Garden. I like this trend, and I’d love to find the recipe and give it a shot sometime.

The Most Interesting Man In The World

Remember those Dos Equis ‘most interesting man in the world’ commercials? A friend sent me this article, and it turns out the actor who plays the most interesting man, Johnathan Goldsmith, is actually quite interesting himself. Here are a few examples: A montage of highlights from the real life of Jonathan Goldsmith might include (had there been cameras present) footage of him rescuing a stranded climber on Mt. Whitney, saving a drowning girl in Malibu, sailing the high seas with his friend Fernando Lamas. “I love the old philosophers,” he said. “I have a large library. I am not a die-hard sports fan. I love to cut wood.” Goldsmith eventually made it—out to Los Angeles, anyway—and embarked on a career as

Free Beer!

Gotcha, but it’s very close to free. A few classmates and I have been working on the board of a local non-profit organization, Somerville Local First (SLF). SLF helps to build “a sustainable Local First economy by supporting and promoting locally owned and independent businesses, artists and nonprofits” in Somerville. They’re hosting a fundraiser at the Foundry On Elm, a new restaurant and pub in Davis Square, on Wednesday, April 6th from 6:00-8:00pm. Tickets are only $20, and include a beer and wine tasting from 6:00-7:00pm and appetizers from 6:00-8:00pm. Here are a few reasons you should buy a ticket soon: 1. 100% of the money goes to SLF, so you’d be supporting a good cause. 2. The beer is all

Brewing Beer With Vanilla Beans

I was recently out in San Francisco, and went to the Thirsty Bear brew pub on Howard street. All of the beers I tried were pretty good, but their Golden Vanilla ale really blew me away. It had a cream soda taste –without being too sweet — and the vanilla was pleasant, but not overpowering. I generally prefer to brew and drink beers that stick with just the four primary beer ingredients — water, barley, hops, and yeast — but every once in a while it’s good to experiment. So my roommate and I decided we’d buy some vanilla beans and take a shot at a vanilla ale. After doing some research, we learned that the best way to brew with vanilla

MIT’s Brewing Green Beer

Well, kind of. But not the green beer you drink on St. Patrick’s day. An MIT mechanical engineering grad has developed a new technology to turn spent grain from the brewing process into natural gas to be used in…well the brewing process. Sounds very sensible. His invention is called the “biphase orbicular bioreactor” and is a type of anaerobic methane digester. Those words alone are impressive. He’s working with Magic Hat’s Vermont Brewery, which installed his system last year. Here’s an excerpt from the Globe: Before he started “saving the earth, one beer at a time,” all inventor Eric Fitch knew about home brewing was that it could make quite a mess. Once, he accidentally backed up the plumbing in

Beer and Sex

I mentioned earlier that I think I need to write more about sex. And of course, whether or not it’s actually true, this blog is supposed to be loosely about beer. So this recent post from the OkCupid blog, whose writers have collected data from millions of people, seems to be particularly relevant. Don’t shoot the messenger: Among all our casual topics, whether someone likes the taste of beer is the single best predictor of if he or she has sex on the first date. No matter their gender or orientation, beer-lovers are 60% more likely to be okay with sleeping with someone they’ve just met. Sadly, this is the only question with a meaningful correlation for women. Interestingly, they also found

Magic Hat and Vinyl

Well really just vinyl in spirit. Blog About Beer has a review of Magic Hat’s newest seasonal offering, the Vinyl Lager: Spring is just around the corner and a lot of spring seasonal beers are starting to come out.  One of those is Vinyl Amber Lager from Magic Hat Brewing Company out of Vermont, and I was fortunate enough to have them mail me out a bottle to try. Probably one of my favorite things about Magic Hat is their marketing.  I know it’s not the most important thing to beer, but I enjoy it a lot.  I love going to a beer store and just checking out the label designs. Vinyl does have a pretty cool label that reminds me

Pretty Things

There’s a great new “brewery” in town: Pretty Things. They’re based out of Cambridge, and have been around since February 2009. I call them new because their beer really wasn’t readily available in local liquor stores or bars until this past year. And I call them a “brewery” because they don’t actually have one. From their website: We are a gypsy brewery, without a permanent brewing home. We like it that way, we can be whatever we want to be on a shoestring budget. Essentially they rent out temporary space in local breweries, such as the Paper City brewery in Holyoke, MA. It’s a pretty interesting model, and I’m curious to see how long it works for them. But regardless,
